The School's Many Locations

Polytechnic schools occupied the second and third floors of 309 Regent Street (location 5 on the map) until 1939. Quintin Kynaston has been in St John's Wood (location 12 on the map) since 1956. In between the school experienced a nomadic existence. Some sites relate to the period before 1886.

Location details

1. Adelphi Arches, WC2

By the River Thames behind the Adelphi. The original arches have been replaced and an embankment built. In Savoy Place between Strand and Victoria Embankment. Where Quintin Hogg gave a reading lesson in 1864.

2. York Place, WC2

A narrow lane between John Adam Street and Victoria Embankment and now called York Buildings. Quintin Hogg set up his first Ragged School in a house here.

3. Endell Street, WC2

A road between Shaftsbury Avenue and Long Acre. Largely industrial buildings have become fashionable in London's West End. Site of Quintin Hogg's Ragged School until 1878.

4. 48-49 Long Acre, WC2

Site of the Polytechnic Young Men's Christian Institute until 1886.

5. 309 Regent Street, W1

At the northern end of the famous shopping street. Polytechnic boys' schools occupied the second and third floors from 1886 until 1939 when they were evacuated.

6. Minehead, Somerset

The seaside resort where the school spent its wartime evacuation between 1939 and 1944.

7. Albany Street, NW1

St Katherine's House with Adam ceilings and 'a nice garden'. Now 14 Albany Street. Used for pupils remaining in London during the evacuation or returning early.

8. Peter Street, W1

The derelict Pulteney Schools were at the southern end of Berwick Street in the heart of Soho. Now part of Westminster Kingsway College. The main school came here when it returned from evacuation in 1944.

9. Little Tichfield Street, W1

The 'Great Portland Street' annex of the Polytechnic institute. Pupils had use of their excellent science laboratories between 1945 and 1956.

10. 107-111 Charing Cross Road, WC2

Originally the College for the Distributive Trades, this is now the Central St Martins College of Art & Design. Provided classrooms from 1946 to 1956.

11. Saltram Crescent, W9

Site of Paddington Secondary Technical School until 1956. It became Kynaston School when it moved to St. John's Wood.

12. Marlborough Hill, NW8

Newly built in 1956 in St. John's Wood. The home of Quintin Kynaston School.

13. Gifford Street, N1

Disused school in Islington just north of King's Cross Station. Temporary home in 1986/7 while the school was decontaminated of asbestos.
