Art and Design

Art and design at QK provides a varied curriculum with a skills-based context where students are encouraged to become confident learners using their creative energy in a positive way and finding their own 'artistic voice'. In addition, students experience a range of cultural and creative whole school activities as well as engaging in gallery and museum visits to further their ability to convey and understand opinions through art and design.

Highlights of 2009 Results

88% of Year 9 students achieved level 5 or above. 46% students gained A*-C outcomes at GCSE Art and Design, 100% attained A*-G. 100% of students studying Btec Art and Design Level 2 were awarded a Pass or above. 85% of AS Art students and 100% at A2 gained good A-level grades.

Current Developments

The department is currently developing further working partnerships and links with galleries such as working with artist Julien Opie and designer Mary Butcher at the V&A. Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 pupils participate in art visits to the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Royal Academy as well as engaging with artist in school based workshops. To enrich Sixth Form coursework studies, students engage in figurative life drawing with professional art models and develop their portfolios at advice days with universities.

Beyond QK

Recently, two students in year 9 and year 11 won a London based competition ‘In the Footsteps of Witkacy’ will visit cultural and art establishments in Poland. Many opportunities for Sixth Form students are available at universities and colleges in weekend courses and a continuation of lectures and seminars with practising artists for sixth form students. Links with primary feeder schools are being planned for sixth form enrichment work with art and design. GCSE Art and Key Stage 3 field trips are planned to the Tate Modern.
