Key Stage 4

The broad areas of study are:

Number

Including the ability to use a range of methods of computation and to use a calculator.

Algebra

The expression of relationships, their algebraic manipulation and the use of algebra to solve problems.

Shape, Space and Measures

Exploration of shape and space through drawing, theoretical and practical work, e.g. area, volume, angles etc.

Handling Data

Use of statistical methods, the representation of data and problems involving probability.

Using and Applying Maths

Through practical problem solving and mathematical investigations.

Assessment

All students study for the Edexcel Modular Specification B. The majority of the year group will do the modular course consisting of 3 units, two being sat in year 10 with the final one at the end of year 11. Initial decisions about which Tier—Foundation (grades G to C) or Higher (grades D to A*)—are made at the beginning of year 10 and are based on performance in the year 9 pathway examinations. Students will be monitored closely throughout the two years, final decisions regarding tier of entry will be made following mock exams which take place before each official GCSE module.

Written Examination (100%)

Unit 1: Statistics & Probability – Calculator – 30%
Unit 2: Number, Algebra & Geometry 1 – Non-calculator – 30%
Unit 3: Number, Algebra & Geometry 2 – Calculator – 40%

Students targeted A/A* and performing exceptionally well will be given the opportunity to take Maths GCSE in year 10 and to begin an advanced study of maths in year 11.
