BTEC Horticulture

This is a practical course for students who wish to learn horticultural skills. The course will be mostly active learning through practical experience. All units consist of a set of formal assessment tasks/assignments. There is a small written component to the course and its assessments but there is no final exam paper.

Students will study 4 units of work throughout the course.

  1. Understand the basic principles of plant science.
  2. Understand the basic principles of soil science.
  3. Establish and maintain plants outdoors.
  4. Participate in protected horticultural crop production.

Students taking this course may wish to progress to a level 3 course in Horticulture or Land Based Activities, or they may wish to use the course as a way into jobs in the horticultural industry.

The course will also support student's understanding of science as it will help to develop their knowledge and understanding of biology in a practical way.

The course will involve working outside at times and has a significant physical element to it.

Assessment

Pass = 2 C's at GCSE
Merit = 2 B's at GCSE
Distinction = 2 A's at GCSE
