Key Stage 4

GCSE Physical Education

The course builds on knowledge, understanding and skills established in Key Stage 3 Physical Education. It will give you exciting opportunities to be involved in a number of different physical activities, promoting active and healthy lifestyle. You can perform one or all of the following roles: player/participant, leader or official. You should have an interest in PE and Sport, enjoy being active and appreciate the benefits of keeping fit and healthy.

The GCSE Physical Education course will appeal to you if you:

  • Have a keen interest in sport and recreation and always look forward to your PE lessons
  • Take part in sport/recreation outside of class time
  • Want to follow a course that develops knowledge and understanding through practical involvement
  • Want to know more about the benefits of sport and exercise
  • Want to improve your own performance in a range of sports roles
  • Are considering a sports related career or an A level higher education course

What you will learn?

  • Develop your knowledge and practical skills in a range of physical activities
  • Examine the effects of exercise and how training can improve performance
  • Find ways to improve your own performances in a variety of roles
  • Identify ways to develop and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle through participation in physical activity

How will I be assessed?

The GCSE course is assessed over the two units.

Unit 1 is externally assessed through written examination paper of 1 hour and 30 minutes. This will contribute to 40% of your total marks.

Unit 2 assessed in two sections:

Section 1 – 4 practical performances in the role of either player/participant, leader or official. This will contribute to 48% of your total marks.

Section 2 – analysis of performance in one of the chosen activities. This will be worth 12% of your total marks. This will include planning, performing and evaluating a Personal Exercise Programme.

What can I do after I've completed the course?

  • Allows progression to related vocational qualifications such as BTEC First and National or Sport and Exercise
  • Can lead to a variety of employment opportunities such as recreational management, leisure activities, coaching officiating, fitness industry, PE teaching.

BTEC Sport

BTEC Sport course has been developed to focus on: education and training for those working in the sports sector and providing opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life. The assessment approach of the BTEC Sport allows for learners to receive feedback on their progress throughout the course as they provide evidence towards the grading criteria. Learners are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and achievement.

Students will study 3 units of work throughout the year. All units consist of a set of formal assessment tasks/assignments.

The range of tasks will include:

  • Experimental reports
  • Investigative research
  • Practical assessments
  • Individual and group presentations

The three modules covered include:

Planning and Leading Sports Activities

Involves planning and preparing physical activity lessons for children aged between 11-12 years as well becoming aware of the Health & Safety aspects involved in working with children.

The Body in Sport

This includes research tasks into the various anatomical and physiological demands on the body in sport. You will learn the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, respiratory and cardiovascular system. In addition, the ways in which the body is designed to move in relation to sport.

Practical Sport

Includes taking part in an individual sport and a team sport. Evaluating performance through diary log books and looking at the different aspects involved in the rules, regulations and scoring systems in each sport will be studied in depth. In addition, the role of the official will also be evaluated.

Please do not apply to this course if you think it involves doing PE all of the time – it doesn't!!!

This course requires extremely hard work that will be classroom based a lot of the time as it is 100% coursework.

Assessment:

  • Pass = 2 C's at GCSE
  • Merit = 2 B's at GCSE
  • Distinction = 2 A's at GCSE
