BTEC Sport (Level 2 Extended Certificate)

Course Description: BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Sport

The BTEC Extended Certificate in Sport have been designed to build on learning from Key Stage 3, for those that may wish to explore vocational route throughout Key Stage 4, and in post-16 education.

It introduces you to the world of employment in Sport and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification. This is a Level 2 course and is the equivalent of two GCSE's at Grades A-C.

Students will study the following units:

Unit 1: Fitness Testing and Training

This unit gives students the opportunity to explore the essential fitness requirements and training methods used to achieve successful sports performance. It also explores lifestyle and psychological factors and the effects these can have on sports training and performance. Students will investigate their personal fitness levels by participating in a series of fitness tests.

Unit 2: Practical Sport

This unit focuses on developing and improving the learners' own practical sports performance. Students take part in practical activities in a team and individual sport and analyse their own and others performances.

Unit 4: Anatomy and Physiology of Sport

Unit involves studying the Cardiovascular system, Respiratory System, Muscular System, Skeletal System and Energy System.

Unit 7: Planning and Leading

This Unit provides learners with the knowledge and skills to be able to plan and lead a range of practical sports activities. It is the first step into leadership and sports coaching.

Assessment

All units consisted of a set of formal assessment tasks/assignments. The range of tasks will include: Experimental reports, investigative research, practical assessments, individual and group presentations.

BTEC Sport (Subsidiary Diploma)

Course Description: Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport

The BTEC Subsidiary Diploma is a qualification which can extend a learner's programme of study and provide vocational emphasis for learner's programme of study and provide vocational emphasis for learners following an Applied GCE or GCE route or combination of both in their main programme of study.

Students will study the following units:

Unit 1: Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport

This unit explores the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular & respiratory systems, and how each responds to exercise.

Unit 2: The Physiology of Fitness

The aim of this unit is to explore the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and also to learn the fundamentals of the energy systems.

Unit 3: Assessing Risk in Sport

The aim of this unit is to make the student explicitly aware of the vital nature of risk assessment and its management within the sports industry.

Unit 5: Sports Coaching

Students develop their own knowledge of coaching by investigating the work of recognised successful coaches and reflecting on the reasons and means of their success.

Unit 7: Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise

The aim of this unit is to give learners the skills and knowledge to plan a fitness training programme and to monitor and evaluate it.

Unit 8: Practical Sport

This unit aims to develop the students’ own practical sports performance, focusing on the application of skills, techniques and tactics. This is achieved through participation in practical activities, & refection on their performances & those of those performers.

Unit 11: Sports Nutrition

The aim of this unit is to provide a broad understanding of the importance of nutrition and hydration to a variety of sports participants.
